🦴 Basics

What is a Fraction?

A fraction = Numerator ÷ Denominator
The numerator is on top (how many pieces you have).
The denominator is on bottom (total equal pieces).

Rex the Dino has 1 pizza cut into 4 equal slices. He ate 1 slice → he ate 1/4 of the pizza! The bottom always shows how many total equal pieces exist.

🌿 LCD

Finding the LCD (Least Common Denominator)

To add or subtract fractions with different denominators,
find the Least Common Denominator (LCD) first.
LCD = the smallest number both denominators divide into evenly.

⭐ Must Memorize — LCD Method

Step 1: List multiples of each denominator.
Step 2: Find the smallest number on BOTH lists.
Step 3: Convert each fraction to use the LCD.

📝 Worked Example: LCD of 6 and 8

Multiples of 6: 6, 12, 18, 24, 30...

Multiples of 8: 8, 16, 24, 32...

✅ LCD = 24

➕ Addition

Adding Fractions

Same denominator: Add numerators, keep denominator.
a/c + b/c = (a+b)/c

Different denominators: Find LCD first, convert, then add.

⭐ Must Memorize

Same bottom? Just add the top!
Different bottom? LCD → convert → add tops → simplify!

📝 Example 1 (same denominator): 2/5 + 1/5

Same denominator (5) → add tops: 2 + 1 = 3

✅ Answer: 3/5

📝 Example 2 (different): 1/3 + 1/4

LCD of 3 and 4 = 12

1/3 = 4/12 1/4 = 3/12

4/12 + 3/12 = 7/12

Subtracting Fractions

Same denominator: Subtract numerators, keep denominator.
Different denominators: Find LCD first, then subtract.

Subtraction works just like addition — same rules!
Find LCD → convert → SUBTRACT tops → simplify!

📝 Example 1: 5/8 − 3/8

Same denominator → 5 − 3 = 2

2/8 → simplify ÷ 2 = 1/4

✅ Answer: 1/4

📝 Example 2: 3/4 − 1/6

LCD of 4 and 6 = 12

3/4 = 9/12 1/6 = 2/12

9/12 − 2/12 = 7/12

Multiplying Fractions

Multiply straight across!
Numerator × Numerator, Denominator × Denominator
a/b × c/d = (a×c) / (b×d)
Then simplify your answer.

⭐ Must Memorize

Multiplication = EASY! No LCD needed!
Top × Top, Bottom × Bottom → then simplify!

📝 Example: 2/3 × 3/4

Top: 2 × 3 = 6 Bottom: 3 × 4 = 12

6/12 → simplify ÷ 6 = 1/2

✅ Answer: 1/2

Rex's tip: Cross-cancel BEFORE multiplying to keep numbers small! Example: 2/3 × 3/4 → cancel the 3s → 2/1 × 1/4 = 2/4 = 1/2. Same answer, easier math!

Dividing Fractions

Keep → Change → Flip (KCF)
Keep the first fraction, Change ÷ to ×, Flip the second fraction
a/b ÷ c/d = a/b × d/c

⭐ Must Memorize — KCF Rule

🔄 Change ÷ to ×
🔃 Flip the second fraction (reciprocal)
Then multiply straight across!

📝 Example 1: 3/4 ÷ 1/2

Keep 3/4, Change ÷ to ×, Flip 1/2 → 2/1

3/4 × 2/1 = 6/4 = 3/2

✅ Answer: 3/2 (or 1½)

📝 Example 2: 2/3 ÷ 4/9

Keep 2/3, Change ÷ to ×, Flip 4/9 → 9/4

2/3 × 9/4 = 18/12 = 3/2

✅ Answer: 3/2 (or 1½)

✨ Simplify

Simplifying Fractions (Reducing)

Divide both the numerator AND denominator by their Greatest Common Factor (GCF).
A fraction is fully simplified when GCF = 1.

📝 Example: Simplify 6/8

GCF of 6 and 8 = 2

6÷2 = 3 8÷2 = 4

✅ 6/8 = 3/4
